FAQs
How long does it take to grow?
Spruce seeds take 10-20 days to sprout. Spruce will slowly grow over the course of several years.
Why haven't my seeds sprouted?
Some seeds may fail to germinate (this is nature). If sprouts don’t appear in 3-4 weeks, the seeds may have been planted too deep, growing medium is too dry or wet, or temps are too low. In dry climates or during cooler months, consider creating a greenhouse effect by placing the empty grow medium bag over the planter. Punch a few holes for ventilation. Remove the bag once sprouts are 1” tall. Spruce trees like abundant moisture at the roots. Coconut husk growing medium should feel like a damp sponge but not be soggy. If temps outside drop below 40°F, remove planter from window to prevent cold damage.
Can I transplant this and grow a full-sized tree?
This Grow Kit is designed to grow a small White Spruce plant; however, in certain regions you can transplant it into the ground to grow into a full size tree. Spruce trees are native to northern regions in North America. To determine if you can transplant your spruce outside contact your state's Master Gardener Program: http://www.ahs.org/gardening-resources/master-gardeners Transplant outside into a location with partial to full sun after the threat of frost has passed, and tree sprouts are at least 6“-9” tall. Prior to transplanting, harden off plant for 5-7 days by placing it outdoors in partial sun during the day, and bringing it indoors at night.
